Ok so I relocated to Sc purchased a brand new trailer before I left nj and towed her down when we moved on thanksgiving. So last summer I was traveling a lot an I never put the boat in the water I had the marina install anew voltage gauge " it was acting up and a new fuel sender my gauge was maxed out. So a month ago I put a new starting battery and ran her for about 2 hours with the ear muffs. The motor is running just fine. A few days ago I went to start her and she was dead. The negative black wire was split and melted on the battery. I also noticed my power trim was leaking fluid. So here where I need advice the fuel gauge was working fine could that wire of been messing that and my voltage gauges up? It's the main negative line that goes to the motor? Second if it's not the seal on the trim at fixing it for about 3500 to 4500 for a new assembly, should I just put a new 4 stroke on for 12-15k?? The 02 2 stroke doesn't have over 3-400 hours on it but idk it's doesn't have an hour meter on her. Thanks guys for any input

I'd be concerned more about why the negative wire to the battery was "split and melted". Someone correct me of I'm wrong, But yes, lack of a ground will cause the fuel gauge to peg out and you need a ground and a hot wire for the voltage gauge to work... Was the ground wire corroded?
With only 300 - 400 hours, that motor has a long time left on it if it's been maintained properly. I love the 4 strokes, but if it were me and a leaking seal were all that was wrong with it... I'd keep the 2 stroke...and What make and HP motor do you have? I'm pretty sure you can pick up a new or rebuilt unit for a lot less than 3500. A brand new pump for a Yamaha 150 runs less than $100.

You certainly don't need to spend all that on a tilt trim, have it resealed or get a used or rebuilt one. My 2 stroke has over a thousand hours on it, 300 to 400 is nothing.

It's a yamaha 150hp, the wire was blacked out at the split ,there is about 4 extra foot in the bilge. Tomorrow or Tuesday I am gonna cut and put a new terminal eye on it. As for the trim assembly the cheapest I've see one online is 2500. I'm the first owner of the boat she looks like she just came from the sea pro factory. I've maintain the boat with an open check book. My only thought was why put the 3k into a 13 year old motor. I'm just gonna hope it's just the seals if not I'll throw a 4- stroke 200 yamaha on her. Thanks guys.

I quoted just the trim motor for $100... sounds like you're wanting a reason to get a 4 stroke. but as gnrphil posted.. you can find the whole assembly for less than $2500. and a seal kit for under $100. Someone's going to get a good 2 stroke if you trade her in.

Thanks for the input guys, the unit listed on the eBay link wasn't mine, the only one a saw that looked like mine was for the yamaha 250. Odd it even threw the mechanics off. But needless to say I got the new yamaha wire that was split, the seals all replaced on the trim assembly, 2 batteries. With parts and labor everything done for $500. And yes Juan I was looking for an excuse to put a 4-stroke on the boat. thanks for ruining it for me,lol
