Just purchased a Humminbird 859CI HD DI. Is it possible to hook this up to a 12V battery and run it in simulation mode? I am not able to install it in the boat for a few more weeks, but I would like to hook it up and get familiar with it if possible.
I do not want to damage the unit, but I figure that if I do not hook up the transducer the unit or transducer would not be damaged.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, just get a 12vdc source such as a laptop battery, and a plug from HB, a 2 amp fuse, and you can do whatever you need at home.

There's nothing like marking fish under the living room floor. 239_fishing

Yeah, it does seem silly, but it sure is nice when you need to go over the new software updates and such, while you are at home rather than trying to figure it out when you should be catching fish...

Thank you for the help!
As you might expect I am concerned that I could burn up/short out the new Humminbird.
I do not have access to a laptop battery and was wondering if a regular 12V car battery or 12V lawnmower battery would work.
What are you thoughts on the transducer? Should I just leave it disconnected while operating the unit while out of the boat?
*I noticed that you have a 2000 Sea Pro 210CC with 150hp Johnson?
My baby is a 2004 Sea Boss 210cc with 150hp Johnson which I believe is a very similar boat?
I live in Indiapolis Indiana so there are very few center consoles around and even fewer people with knowledge of this type of boat. I purchased this boat 2 years ago and I absolutely love it!! I attempt to fish for walleye in a few locations in Indiana, and will be bringing the boat to Lake Erie in May to catch a few.

Just run it of a battery in demo mode like you said, can't do any harm as it's the same power source as the boat. Any software updates can be downloaded from HB website on to a SD card.

Yes, the boats are almost identical. In fact, the reason I bought mine is I saw a Sea Boss and decided I really liked the lines. As mentioned above, you can connect to any battery or 12vdc source, but make sure you fuse it so you don't harm it. No need to plug in the transducer, just go to simulation mode.

you can connect to any battery or 12vdc source I didnt write this in my post, (thank you for saying it freezer!). If you or anyone reading who tries this, goes with one of the wall adapters or any other power source for that matter it has to be 12vdc (they make those 12v adapters with ac power.

The reason I suggested a laptop charger is that they seem to be everywhere, and they usually supply a couple of amps. Those new HBs draw about 2 amps and most of your typical transformers are less than that and won't power it but for a second or two.

I run mine in simulator mode using a 12 volt power supply. As stated, no need for transducer. It will detect the lack of transducer and go into simulator mode. This is very useful for uploading and downloading waypoints and then managing them on a computer using the free program HumminbirdPC. Much easier to edit them on the computer. I have the Navionics and Lakemaster chips for the chart feature.

I know Humminbird has a type of connector that allows you to attach it to a laptop to put in waypoints, and that to power it was from a couple of 9 volt batteries. That's how I got my fishing spots programmed in.
