Okay fellas I went for a shakedown run/opening day of Striper season Saturday and I ran into a few issues that I need to fix. The motor is a 2003 Mercury Optimax 200.
Issue 1- When I would put the boat in gear, it would literally SLAM into gear. This wouldn't happen all the time but it happened a few times throughout the day.
Issue 2- The motor would rev up and down when I had it at lower speed and occasionally when I had it at idle.
Issue 3- My power tilt and trim at the console quit working but the one on the motor works fine
Issue 4- Issue 4 was found when I was looking at Issue 1. I have only owned this motor about 8 months. Anyways I looked down in the bottom of the engine and happened to notice 2 bolts and a bracket. I have no clue what they are or where they go? Does anyone recognize them? The picture is below.
So today I took a good look at the engine and I think I may have fixed issue 1 and issue 2. I won't really know until I get the boat on the water though. When I opened the hood and started looking around there was a linkage disconnected. I have posted a photo below. Don't know the name of this item but when I push the lever up manually it revs the engine. I started the motor on the muffs here at the house with it hooked up to the muffs and without the linkage connected it seemed like the motor was revving right before it tried shifting into gear (I could hear this, so I never shifted it here at the house). I turned off the motor and hooked the linkage up how it should be and now when I go to shift into gear you can hear the engine kind of stay idle instead of rev... so I think Issue 1 is definitely fixed. I am hoping Issue 2 is related and is fixed also. I won't know till the next time I take her out.
As far as issue 3 goes... I am not sure what caused this. I know for sure it was working 2 weeks ago and nothing had really been done since then. I reckon I need to just trace the wires and see where they go and see if I see anything wrong? Not sure if there is a fuse or something related to it?
