Now's a great time to check you fire extinguishers and flares to make sure they are not out of date or in need of charging for the upcoming season. Hot tip on the flares.... just like eggs or milk, the later expiration dates are usually in the back of the shelf!

That's a coincidence, I had checked mine yesterday.. and another hot tip on the flares: They're a lot cheaper at WalMart than they are at West Marine.

Good tip. Just checked extinguisher day before yesterday. Bought flares last year. Wal-Mart as stated, best price.

Don't throw those old flares out. They're the best thing going for getting your burn pile started. Fun too.

Now I'm confused and have forgotten what my point was 021

I keep at least two sets of expired flares on the boat as well as my "in date" ones. Just because they are expired doesn't mean they won't start a fire, or still work if you run out of in date ones..

I kept mine for years after the expiration date and got rid of them last year on the 4th of July.. about half of them made kewl fireworks the other half were duds

I've got some expired parachute flares. How does one dispose of something that is supposed to shoot up 300 meters and burn at 30,000 candle power? I'd hate to just pass that on to some unwitting garbageman. I'd love to launch them on July 4th, but I'd be afraid I'd set the woods on fire (not my woods). I'd even thought of taking them out to sea and shooting them off there. How big a fine would I get if the Coast Guard helicopter showed up?

You should disassemble it and remove the parachute, then reassemble. Makes a great anti personnel rocket flare . OR shoot them with the parachute and pull out the 12 gauge, you get the idea 2gunsfiring_v1

Here are some suggestions for disposing of flares from a Boat US article all about flares: What to Do With Expired Flares? Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this question. Flares cannot be recycled, and special care should be taken with their disposal. Throwing flares in your household trash can pose a danger for handlers and can pollute ground water. Setting off old flares can result in false distress reports and may result in fines and penalties. To dispose of expired flares there are few options: -Contact your local public works or sanitation department - some might have house hold hazardous waste days or special drop off sites. You can find waste facilities near you that handle hazardous waste at www.earth911.com-Contact your local police or fire department - it is important to contact them by phone first as they might want to prearrange pickup or delivery. -Check with your local boating retailer for the best method of disposal in the local area. -Check with a local boating education groups such as the Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary. They often use old flares for demonstration purposes. Here's a link to the full article: boatus.org/findings/45/

Great Info Ahhhh-spray! I was going to add that you can offer them to your local FD, PD, or Scout troop, etc. or anyone who trains for emergency situations. They will call the local authorities prior to the training to make sure the rescue squad isn't dispatched once they go off. Less people notice that stuff on the 4th, which is another reason you will not find me out on the water on the 4th.

Definitely don't shoot them off at sea unless you are in distress. Surely it will rain on the 4th or New years.

I am missing a throw cushion, I had 2 but now have none On my boat I store my throwable in between the console and the 94qt cooler just in front of it. There is just enough room and it's easily reachable and has never blown out. Your boat may vary..

We lost one somewhere in the gulf stream and the other who knows when.
