I hope you guys are right. Especially Phil. I have a feeling I'm going to get skinned like a fish.

Well, are you applying for food stamps? I am not, but to hear the mechanic tell the story, he may be soon. They broke the carbs down and cleaned them then ran the boat on the water. The problem was still there so they suspected fuel restriction somewhere. They replaced 2 fuel pumps and ran the boat on the water again using an external fuel supply. Boat ran like a champ. Then they reconnected it to the boat's fuel system and ran it on the water again. Same problems. So, naturally they had to inspect the fuel pickup in the tank, the fuel lines, the water separator, the priming bulb, blah, blah blah. All good. They flushed the fuel lines and found some tiny turds of one sort or another, but the fuel sample was good. So they broke down the carbs again and cleaned them again. They ran it on the water a final time on boat fuel and all is well. The gentleman told me that he has $1,000 in labor in this repair, but flushing the fuel lines and taking a sample is SOP before reconnecting the boat fuel system and they didn't do it. A turd broke loose and clogged a jet so he had to clean the carbs again. Maybe he made all that up to make me fell better about the $450 he did charge me. I don't know. I'll find out when I get to put it in the water again myself. I think everybody here was right to a certain degree. I think Freezer was the closest to the actual bill without going over. I'm glad to have my boat back and can't wait to go fishing again!

As much as I'd like to take Credit, it appears Juan was actually closer. I should have used the "dollar more" technique from The Price is Right! Glad you got it back.

What did I win? Glad you got it fixed and running right. You actually got a deal IMHO. I had a similar problem with a previous boat. They had to test it on the river twice. I towed it to the river for them (20 miles one way) both times and rode with the mechanic while he was checking it out. The mechanic was new in town and looking for a house, so we even rode around a bit and I showed him a couple that were for sale. When I got the bill it was over $2,000. They charged me for the hours the mechanic was riding in my truck to and from the river, the time spent riding around in the boat while he was trying to figure the problem out and even the time we spent house shopping. Then there was the price of parts on top of all that. I was pissed. The problem turned out to be nothing more than fouled injectors... could have had them cleaned for $100.

You've won my unwavering admiration.
That's a terrible story. Like the original "No good deed goes unpunished" story. I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope that guy got attacked by fire ants shortly after that.
