Thanks mosquito... Yes, the best and easiest way to find the problem would have been to take it to the shop but I've been trying to avoid that since I hate the local Yamaha shop and all the local shops are backed way up. It looks like I'll have to take it to the shop any way. I originally thought it was an overheating problem but after changing the thermostat and then checking the temp with my temp gun as you mentioned, I ruled that out and decided not to change the water pump. Yesterday I checked the oil filter and now the alarm goes off at idle speed instead of near 3,000 rpms like it was doing so I did a compression test. That looked good. (195 on 3 cylinders and 190 on the other.) Now I'm suspecting either the low oil pressure sensor or oil pump so I disconnected the low oil pressure sensor and the alarm stops... pulled the sensor out and put a oil pressure gauge in the hole... it had 12 psi at start up and dropped to 0. It should hold around 60 psi so I think the sensor is working and the oil pump has gone out. Either way, I don't feel comfortable trying to change the oil pump, so it's going to the shop.

Thanks guys. Took it to a shop in Panama City this morning. Phil, I checked THT but didn't see that thread. Thanks, I believe that's exactly the problem with mine and the mechanic at the dealer agrees. SC.. it's actually not called a harmonic balancer. That's a different animal. The harmonic balancer is a weight attached to the flywheel. The true name for this thing is a balancer assembly. There have been 4 revised versions of it since the original and mine still had the original. I looked at one of the new ones this morning at the dealer's shop. The new ones are built differently and have an oil tower that the originals lacked. The mechanic said he's changed many and two of his own. He said after the upgrade that motor is close to bulletproof. If there's no other damage, I'm getting a new balancer assembly, new oil pick up screen, (oil pump if needed) and something called a speedy sleeve. I'm hoping there's no other damage but either way, I'll be Sea Pro less for a while.

I just happened on that thread yesterday. Yep, that's why I missed it. I've read everything I could find on the subject every where I could find it but quit before that one was posted. Very informative thread. I appreciate you posting the link.

Not certain what the balancer assembly does and why it would be faulty and come apart BTW did you get your 50% discount on labor since you told him you were a big wig with the Sea Pro Forum? Darn, maybe I should have asked about a forum discount instead of asking if they had a military or senior citizen discount! I'm with you... I've read a ton of articles about the balancer assembly and I STILL don't know exactly what it does.. only that the original assembly has carbon fiber or nylon gears meshed to metal gears and is prone to failure. I'm not even sure the assembly is needed since some people have just removed the two gear shafts and gears within the assembly and report it runs fine without it. Some report failure at low hours and some in the thousands of hours but eventually it fails.. The smart owners had their balancer assemblies replaced before any indication of failure at a cost of under $500. The not so smart owners waited until they had a problem before changing the assembly and then it cost them in the neighborhood of $2,000 to make the same repair. I fall in the "not so smart" category. Wish I had listened to others and changed it before it went to pieces. The old saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it!) isn't always the best advice. Hope that made sense... just got back from knee surgery and still a bit under the influence

I've heard there is a "commercial" version of the motor that doesn't have the balancer at all. I think it just smoothes out vibration at idle.

Get well soon Juan. Boat and knee. Thanks crabs. I'm sure the knee will heal before the Yammie does. All the shops are backed up with repairs and repowers. They said it will probably be at least 2 weeks before they get to mine so I'm expecting a month. With therapy, I hope the knee will be fixed before that.
