You were right. It was pure ethanol mixed with rust from the fuel/water separator. Here's the update. So I cut a larger hole to access the fuel sender. I have a 6" rim to rim deck plate and now I have a 10" access hole. Made all the difference in the world (see Pic). Then I jacked up the boat (see pic) and pumped out what was remaining in the tank ( see pic), that's pure ethanol. For anyone wondering this 20 gallon tank is only 7.5" deep. Its kinda hard to read on the tape measure. Once all the liquid was out, I took a rag and attached it to a straightened hanger and pushed it around in the tank. It was fairly clean, but I did it three times. Then I blew air thru all the fuel lines and cleaned out the tank again. I talked with a chemical engineer and she said that the fuel went thru phase separation and the water remaining went into the fuel/water separator where it sat and rusted as you can see by the photo of the torn apart filter (that filter was only 1 month old and the boat ran twice on that filter. The water mixed with the salt air rusted the filter and got sucked thru the filter into the carb bowl. The sandy looking but fine particles were dried gas mixed with rust. All that got thru a 10 micron filter. I am now installing a filter with a bowl where I can see and drain and I will be getting 5 micron or less. This of course has been a valuable learning experience for me. I take full responsibility for why this occurred. Im just glad I had access to knowledgeable people who could help me understand the mess. Attachments:

Wow. Ethanol = Evil. Those pictures tell you all you need to know about it. Don’t use it if you can avoid it and treat it if you can’t.
It looks as if the mystery is solved and you’ve dodged the tank change bullet. Congratulations. Are you going to try going back to the main tank now?

sagegal where is this filter located? I have an 03 yamaha 90
Been noticing the same color in my fuel as well. Just replaced my fuel water separator with brand new 10 micron filter with the clear bottom and drain and I can see it. Did you find any way to resolve the issue?

The little cup filter is on the engine right behind my oil tank. I have a fuel/water separator filter in the compartment with the battery and bilge and I want to switch to a fuel/water separator kit that has a bowl but have been recommended not to because the bowls notoriously leak and having that set up in an enclosed space with the battery and bilge might be asking for trouble. Since I removed the entire fuel/water separator unit already installed on my boat I will most likely replace my Yamaha mini 10 micron separator with a regular sized one.
