It has been a while since I took mine apart, but I don't remember a snap ring. I think i just had to pry it apart. After seeing the level of corrosion inside, I scrapped it and went for a brand new one. Not worth the risk IMO.
and just FYI for anyone following along... This motor is still running today.. It doesn't see many hours and I don't think i'll ever fully trust it, but the multiple oil flushes definitely seemed to do the trick.

I just took mine apart today- also when a ton of corrosion. I plan to just buy another. The oil cooler is pressed together and if you have a vise just use a piece of wood in the middle on the inside and one on each outside edge. Apply force slowly and equally. I used PB blasters to help.
