Went out Saturday morning to the CBBT. Engine developed a knock. No engine alarms and oil level fine in tank and on engine. Engine lost no performance but I idled back in to be on the safe side. When flushing the engine the knocking seems to be coming from the lower end of the powerhead. Engine has around 600 hours and has been serviced regularly. I called local dealer and there is a 2 week backlog to get it in for service. Any ideas what I might be looking at? Rebuild, reman., re-power?

The first thing I would do is take the spark plugs out to see if there is any obvious sings of internal damage. Next check the compression and that will usually tell the story.

A knock like you are describing usually means main bearings. IDK if they can work them in place or if they have to pull the powerhead. If I was gonna keep the boat and the powerhead has to be pulled, I would replace it with a reman (that has a warranty!) instead of trying to rebuild your current powerhead. Just my 2 cents...

Good news, it ended up being the lower unit vs. the powerhead. Appears the pinion gear failed. Amazed that I was able to idle in as damage was pretty bad.
