guys, ran up on a sand bar @ the boat launch, sucked in sand/rocks. Usually my engine spits water pretty hard and after the sand bar run in it was barely trickling, I put it on the trailer and let it run and i could see little pebbles and sand in the water exit hole in the back of my engine. Got it home and took that exit hose off from the inside of the engine and washed alot of debris out of it, reinstalled hose and attempted to flush the system and now it wont trickle at all much less shoot like its supposed too. I am going to try hooking up the hose to the back of the engine and see if it flushes that way, if not I guess its off to the marina for a new water pump/impeller, first boat-first major issue.......@#&!it
How much yall reckon I fouled up today, its a 02 90 Merc 4 stroke

Not bad unless you over heated it. New impeller with housing , a good flushing and you should be back in business.

I would do a impeller this off-season. Until then I would probably ride with it.

I did the same thing with my first boat (90 four stroke Merc) Got it flushed out and changed the impeller in the off season.

The skinny-water guys down here on the Texas coast run hard into sand and shell all the time. They just clean them out and keep on trucking but they also replace the impellers often. I personally replace my impellers every fall but I put about 300-450 hours per year on my engines. Mercury says to do it every couple years or so.
You did not say if it is an Optimax but if so there is another filter in the cooling system you will need to pay attention to. The cooling water strainer screen has been known to cause some real problems and it is very susceptible to plugging when sand or shell gets into the intake. It is on the bottom rear of the port side of the engine.
