Last season I had the seals changed on my Yamaha 2001 F100, (4 stroke)when I dropped the lo case oil, IT STUNK! He changed the lower case oil when he did the seals. I put about 15 or 20 hrs on it and just dropped it again, IT STINKS (burnt). No mayo or shavings, just dark and SMELLY! Any thoughts, Ive read the lower case oil smells. Motor runs great! Thanks!

Your motor has gas. strike a match. Sorry, I couldn't resist... I think it's common for the lower case oil to stink.. mine did too the last time I changed it.

Using semi-synthetic or full synthetic oil seems to eliminate or greatly reduce the problem

Yep, the Mercury Quicksilver smells pretty bad. The new oil going in smells not so sweet eaither when I did mine about a week ago. It's just smell petroleum 90 weight oil.

The offensive smell in GL-5 gear oils is due to the sulfur-based EP additive package - unpleasant, but completely normal.

Yes very normal, but you only smell it when you change it so nothing to worry about.

Yeah, that was a trick my older brother used to do when he'd fart in the car. He'd give it a few seconds and ask "Does anybody smell fresh doughnuts?" and everybody in the car would automatically breathe in two lungs full through their nose before reaching frantically for the roll down windows. I got him back years later when I got power windows with child locks!
