Hi - Wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 90 HP Yamaha two stroke outboard. Was out today and everything was running fine for a while. When repositioning, I found I could not shift into reverse. I stopped the motor for a few minutes and then it would not restart. It does not crank at all. Good battery. I'm thinking it has something to do with the shift control. It will still not go into reverseand will not crank. Anyone have any ideas?

johnsondl, I had a similar problem and when I looked everything over I found a loose nut on the control inside the engine cover. When I tightened it I cured the problem. I had the throttle out to install my outriggers and was afraid that I had gotten the whole thing out of rig but it was the simple little loose nut. Have someone to move the throttle to see what moves to try to figure it out. By the way try to put it in gear and try to start it. Mine started and it shouldn't while it is in gear.Good luck!!!! <`)>((((< ED

Thanks for your help. That doesn't seem to be the issue though. I checked over the linkages and they are all good. The throttle lever just will no go pas the neutral position. The linkage at the outboard stops at the middle or back third of its travel.

johnsondl, That is almost exactly what mine did and one nut was loose on a very small link. I couldn't believe that would cause that much trouble, works fine now though. I can go through my overhaul manual and see if I can find something there. Will it shift when you push the center button and try to put it in reverse? Somewhere the linkage is not in rig. Thinking about it, the shift link has got to be out of rig and is not in neutral, not starting. If it won't go in reverse it is still in forward and will not shift. I looked up in my O/H manual and it is the length of the control cable and has to be either shortened or lengthened. Loosen the locknut and pull the pin and try it but keep up with how much to adjust it so you can at least go back to where you started. The shift link that is attached to the whole thing should go into neutral with it disconnected. Then it should give you a hint as to which way it should go, since it will probably no longer line up.<`)>((((< ED
