I just got a 195 FS. I keep it in a slip in brackish water. How frequently should I flush the Merc 150 Efi XL?

If you ask 10 people how often you should flush an outboard )or if you even need to flush an outboard at all) you're probably going to get 10 different answers... I agree with qlake, I'd flush it for 10 minutes every time I cranked it in salt or brackish water... heck, I even flush after using mine in fresh water just to be sure there is no sand or mud left in the engine, but I know people (mostly commercial fishermen and people who don't have access to a means to flush) who never flush their outboards... I know my grandfather never flushed his motors either and I don't recall him ever having any problems.. I'd say if you can, FLUSH after every use...but if you miss a week or two, don't worry, any salt build up in the engine will be washed out each time you run it.

I flush it after every trip along with washing the boat and trailer, but then I'm pretty anal about the upkeep of my "toys".

In salt or brackish water flush each time it is run. The concern isn't salt buildup, it is corrosion.

Think about our neighbors to the north where they put salt on the roads during the winter.... if that salt is left on the vehicle, it will sooner or later begin to rust but if it's washed off, it won't start rusting (or it least it takes longer for the corrosion to begin)... salt is corrosive.. and there is salt in brackish water.
