I've been running West Marine's oil in mine for years now.. There are a lot of opinions on this subject but imo, you can run just about any oil as long as you use the recommended viscosity and change it at regular intervals.

BTW What is recommended interval for most 4 stroke engines. I am running synthetic at proper weight for Johnson/Suzuki but I don't put a huge amount of hours on engine in a season. Manual on mine says at least every year but not certain it is same with synthetic. I just look and make sure it is not to dirty before I change. Not certain if this is wrong minded or not. Also I heard it said there are additives in oil specified for marine use that are better than other oils. I don;t know if that is true or not or should I just use some sort of High Detergent oil. I know this is a Yammy thread but I figure earl is earl and yammys and suzukis are about the same. Recommended oil change interval on mine is 100 hours... Like you, I change the oil once a year if it needs it or not.. I don't think I've ever reached the 100 hour mark. As for the additives, I don't know if that's true or not either but I tend to believe it and think it may be important in 2 stroke engines but not in 4 strokes where the oil isn't mixed with the fuel. You can find a lot of comparative oil studies on the internet where they compare various oil companies and their products. Seems there are only a few big companies that actually produce most products. The others buy their oil at the best price and sell it with their company name on it... Wal Mart, West Marine, Yama Lube, Johnson oil, Quicksilver, etc, etc none of them make their own oil.... all buy the oil from one of the big companies. The cheap stuff at Walmart used to be made by Shell oil company...(not sure if that's still true) and it is as good as any out there. I think it all boils down to what you feel comfortable running... Walmart oil should work just fine but for peace of mind and to play it safe, I run oil that they claim is designed for marine use... (it's probably the same Walmart oil as far as I know) You can run a specialty oil like Amsoil or a cheap oil like Dollar Store oil.. just use the right viscosity and you'll be fine,,

Yep, ethanol is definitely TROUBLE!! It cost me a $2,000. repair (just to clean the injectors) but that's another and long story... I'll NEVER use ethanol again in my boat unless it's the only option and then only with marine Sta-Bil or something else to counter the ethanol effects....

If you don't mind telling, where do you get the injectors cleaned in Tampa? I'd like to send them mine when and if it gets too cold to fish.
