Codman, if your motor is still under warranty be careful on the oil you use, my neighbor has a yammy and he was told yamma lube only or they will void the warranty!!!

Like frayedknot said, they can push back on you if you do not use their lube but I don't believe that they can deny a warranty claim as long as it meets their specs. I doubt you have an issue with that still on a 2003 though. I like Penzoil products and have used their 2 cycle oil in the past in my O/B's. My problem is with the added expense of the synthetic. I just can't justify it in my mind with a 2 cycle. I mean it's gonna burn anyway right? A 4 cycle is a somewhat different story and I can see people using it. All that said, If you want to go to the added expense or can get a deal on it, it will be fine. A little "overkill" in fact.

Thanks to all for the information. The motor is off warranty, although it has a new factory head replaced by Yamaha 2 years ago while under warranty. I was looking at the price of 2 stroke Yamaha oil by the gallon and the Pennzoil tcw3 synthetic 2 stroke was cheaper at VIP of all places, around $25 / gal. This motor has the the latest upgrades including the one for the oil injector / pump.

Simple Man is correct. Federal law prohibits a manufacturer from forcing you to use a specific brand of oil. You simply must use an oil that meets the required speicification, in this case... TCW3.

I run an 03 90 hp carbed oil injected Yami. I used Yamalube until the warranty ran out. Switched to Pennzoil and have had no problems. Runs clean and no smoke.
