I've got a Yamaha carb. 2-stroke on my 19' Sea Pro Bay Series. It's an 11-year old motor so I don't push it to WOT so as to not tempt fate. Dealer told me WOT is 5,500 RPM. At 3,600 RPM I'm moving at 30-32 mph. At 4,500 RPM I can do 40 mph. That's me and one other large adult with 30 gallons of fuel and 4 batteries. I'd estimate I'm getting around 3.4 mpg when I cruise around 30 mph.
My mechanic told me that the carb. 2 is the way to go. In his estimation, they burn more fuel, but that is more than made up for by reduced maintenance costs. They are not as sexy as the 4-strokes, but the technology has a long history and carburetors are really simple to work on.
This is not to say that I wouldn't love a really quiet 4-stoke, but this is what I've got. I bought it used 2 years ago from a Yamaha dealer. I've put 75 hours on it and I love it. She's a tough first start when it's cold, but after that the first turn of the key is all it takes. I trust this motor to get me 20 miles into the marsh and back without hesitation.
My $.02

Performance will also depends on the prop you're running.
Have a '02 SV2100/150hp 2 cycle Yammie. Came over propped 14x19, was getting 6-6500 RPM @ WOT. Too fast for trolling. Prop guy suggested a 14.5x17, brought WOT down to 5500. Much better on gas now, similar to 985crabs

So dropping pitch by two inches and increasing wheel size by a half an inch brought your RPMs down almost 1000? I'm with Juan, I would have lost that bet....

Yeah I struggle with the physics of the prop thing myself, but the Bay Prop guy knew what I needed. I keep the old one as a spare, but it begs the question: aside from the high trolling speed and the over-rev @ WOT, is there anything wrong with running the 14x19 in the 3-4K rpm range? I only occasionally see conditions when I can run WOT on the Chesapeake Bay.
