So I'm preparing my rig to sail yesterday and I decide to check the pressure in my trailer tires since it's warmed up a bit. I inflate the 2 tires on the hubs to the recommended pressure and I move on to the spare. I started thinking about the spare. The spare isn't under any load so what pressure should it be inflated to? If I inflate it to the same pressure as the others and I have to mount it won't the pressure go up when the load hits it? Then it would be overinflated. I posed this question to my engineer son, but he was partying at Jazz Fest and he was unable to give me a satisfactory answer. Maybe this is a stoopid question, but should the spare be inflated a little less to compensate? How much less?

I don't think the additional weight placed on a tire increases the pressure very much if at all.. Does seem like it should but when you have a tire patched or repaired at a tire shop, they inflate it to the recommended pressure without it being mounted so I do the same.. I keep the PSI in my spare the same as the PSI in the mounted tires.. in my case that's 50 PSI. If it's hot, the pressure will go up and go down if it's cold, so it pays to check the PSI often.

Inflate it to the max psi stamped on the sidewall.

As long as the temperature and volume of the tire doesn't change, the pressure won't either (ideal gas law). If the tire is way under inflated then you might change the volume of the tire and show a detectable pressure increase. Otherwise, the volume of the tire will change so little than any pressure change would be undetectable. Short answer, do as Others have said and inflate it as you do the other tires.

Thanks Woody, but I thought you took them with you? I haven't seen one in a while. If I see one, I'll send your regards right before I eat him.
