Does the piece in the picture below help support the transom? I would really like to cut it out a little and install a bigger access hatch rather than just having that small circle access port. I would basically get rid of the circle hatch and make a rectangular hatch. Attachments:

Round hatches are more water tight.

You won't gain much space in there with a rectangular hatch. Shouldn't weaken anything if you cut it in right. Measure twice cut once!

Been thinking about the same thing. Would like to put a upper drain in my live well and get rid of the tube but don't think I can get at it thru the current port.

Just to add , a rectangular hatch will have a hinged lid and with all them cables in the way it will hinder access with lid swing.

I'd open that circular hatch, feel underneath for supports, and if there weren't any, I'd cut that sucker out and put in a rectangular hatch. It has to be a real pain trying to do anything through that hatch. A rectangular hatch should give you more room to access the bilge but even with the extra room, it's still no piece of cake. Mine came with a rectangular hatch. They have a rubber seal and are waterproof and they're a lot quicker to remove than the screw in type circular hatches in case you need to access the bilge in a hurry. As stated, they are hinged, but the only time mine has a problem opening all the way or closing, is when the motor is tilted all the way up. I tried to find a decent picture of the lid but this is all I had:

You'll be fine putting a bigger hatch in.
Working in the bilge will be MUCH easier and that splash well doesn't provide support to the transome.

I third the bigger hatch. Someone needs flogging for putting in those little round access hatches.
