I just brought my outboard in to get the lower unit seals replaced and water pump but the mechanic called me back and said there was fuel leaking out of my carbs. If I'm not mistaken aren't the carbs located towards the outside of the top unit of the motor. If the carbs where leaking fuel wouldn't I have been able to smell fuel? I'm just trying to get a handle on this because I've had other issues with mechanics before and I didn't bring in the motor for them to check out the top unit, only for them to check the lower unit. They're estimate was a $1000 in parts and labor so what I'm curious about is how much are carburetors and is it something you can do on your own?

I got the boat back from the mechanic. He said that there was noticeable amount of gas gushing out of the carburetors while at idle. I tested it out and their wasn't a single drop of gas and no smell of gas. However there was a sound of misfires, I don't know if that's because I havens started it in awhile or because I just recently replaced the spark plugs.

if its gushing you would smell it. Take a video of it running without the cowl on and post it here if you can ...
Yamaha? Johninrude? Merc? Zuke?

So I was told by another person that my motor is acting like this because I have ethanol fuel in my tank and that there was debris in the fuel. I siphoned the fuel to check and all the fuel is clear as day and perfectly fine. The motor wouldn't start before I siphoned the gas so now that I took out the question that it could have been the gas I'm curious as to what this problem could be. Any help?

I can't say if your problem is the same as I had with my Johnson 115 but I had a leak from the carbs also, turned out the one of the float bowls had cracked and two of them had warped to the extent they wouldn't seal. motor would still run though, sounds like you may have a float issue like Freezer said.

Did you get your problem solved? If it has been over three to four years since a carb rebuild, my guess is that's your problem. Have I mentioned that I hate carburetors? EFI FTW! Good luck.
