I have a 115 Mercury that's "cold natured" and hard to start at first but once it starts the first time it starts at the touch of the key the rest of the day.. The control box has the standard neutral indent button on the shifter that allows you to throttle up while in neutral, but it's not working.. I can push the indent button but it still goes into gear when shifted.. How does the indent button work? Is it an electrical switch of some sort? Anyone have a diagram of the inside of a Mercury control box? Looks like this one:

The indent button should allow you to advance the throttle without the motor being in gear. I think it work integral to the box, (ie disengages shift cable and just works throttle cable). Don't have no diagram, sorry. BTW, all Mercurys are cold natured but you need to get this fixed and it will help.

Thanks, Yeah, I know it's supposed to allow you to advance the throttle without the motor being in gear but it isn't working... It doesn't seem like the button is pushing in as far as it should. That's why I need to know if the problem could be inside the control box or possibly an electrical problem somewhere else. Another question: Can you tell the model year of a Mercury by it's serial number? I bought this thing as a 1987 but I'm wondering if it's a 1990. The serial number is B197090. Another thing I learned is the max recommended rpm range is 4750 - 5250. Seems a little low after being used to the 6,000 rpm range on the Yammie. btw: In addition to the fishfinder I put on the bow, I replaced the old humminbird LCR 8000 and put a Garmin chartplotter on the console and discovered it doesn't run 70 mph like I guessed.. I guess it just feels like it because I'm sitting only a few inches above the water. According to the gps, it's actually running closer to 55. Still fast enough.

Pretty sure it's a simple mechanical release on the control box, if you install a analogue speedometer you'll go faster

That button is mechanical, not electrical. The lever normally moves two cables, throttle and gear shift. When the button is pushed it releases the gear shift, only moves the throttle cable. A good spraying of WD 40 while moving the lever may free it up.

I'll try the WD 40 cuz my next question was how to take the thing apart. I can only see a couple of screws

Well, WD-40 didn't work and I gave it a good soaking... SO, I found and removed the three bolts that held it to the gunnel and it came apart. Now there are two screws holding a plate over the mechanics and so far I haven't been able to get those two screws to budge. I'm guessing if I can get that plate off, I might be able to see why the indent button isn't working.

Hot tip... Kano Kroil is the best penetrant/lubricant ever... 3x better than WD or PB blaster.

Well... after soaking the screws with WD 40 and then beating on them with a hammer and trying a bunch of Phillip screw drivers, they still didn't budge and the only thing happening was the screw heads were starting to strip out... so I gave up... It beat me. I'll just use it without the neutral indent button. 013

I've got a Mercury control I'll sell you. It's a binnacle-mount though.

Quitters never win and winners never quit.... and Discretion is the better part of valor! Thanks for the offer Crabs but I'd need a gunnel mount... this one works fine except for the neutral indent button. If that worked it would make it easier to start when it's cold. It's really no big deal and I can live with it like it is, I just like everything to work as it should.
