Now that I've re-carpeted my bunks and added slicks, I'd like to make sure the boat stays on the trailer until I'm ready for it to come off. I don't want my buddy to have to get out of the truck to release me from the wench while we're in the launch lane. It takes too long and its impolite at a crowded launch. I'm thinking of a line tied between the wench stanchion and the bow eye. Once I'm floating and under power I could mosey up to the bow area, pull the quick release end of the line, we slide gently away and my buddy clears the lane quickly. Anyone know of such a knot or a better solution?

Just have your buddy get out of the truck and release you, that's what I do. It takes, what, all of about 1 minute or so? I think if it were a 5 minute or more ordeal, then maybe I'd think twice, but for a minute or 2, I don't think it's a big deal.

Just a simple dock line using the looped end over the cleat would do wouldn't it ? then like you said mosey on up there and unhook it. Lie what this guy does but you'll be in the boat.

I've seen a gadget that releases the boat with a remote control but can't seem to find it again. here's another option that would work. boat release

So those slicks are slick enough to lose the boat even when dry? I would use a little slack and one of those panic snaps like they use with horses..

Did y'all watch Funny Flag Phil's video? That thing is awesome! How much is $549 AUD? I hope they're like Pesos. I have got to have one of those. Phil, send me the link. My buddy sells marine parts all over the southern US. We have to put that in the catalog.
I appreciate the other responses, but what you don't understand is that my buddy is old, decrepit and a spastic. I really don't want him walking around on the ramp where he could slip and fall. He seems to have 2 speeds, slow and reverse. I love him, but he needs to be a minor part of the equation. I also may wish to go out alone or with my wife. I would like to be as slick as possible.
Freezer, I have 3 horse neighbors, but I know nothing about them. What is this panic thing you mentioned?

This is probably the knot you were looking for. I don't know how strong it is, but it looks easy enough...
As far as the panic snaps, I can't seem to find what I'm talking about, but I know they exist. It gives you a way to release under load like if a horse or bull goes nuts.

I think I will experiment with the knot the guy was tying in that video. I found some other variations too. Obviously, the knot needs to be strong enough to trust the boat to, but easy enough to release in a flash.
Freezer, I don't know how slippery the slicks are dry. I know that when we were recovering the boat after putting them on, the boat went up the trailer and right back into the water when I backed of the power. There was no friction. So, I also need to figure that out. I need to give the winch cable a little slack and put the boat on the ramp to see if it moves.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll get this figured out and report back.

There is a lot to be said about owning a smaller boat like my 180...Since I am usually by myself I have found that launching as close to the dock as possible is a big help. When launching what I do is, loosen the winch strap just enough to allow the boat to float, I will give it maybe a foot of slack at the strap. When the boat starts to float I will put the truck in park with the emergency brake on, then I get out and release the winch strap, I have a long bow line that allows me to control the boat while standing on the dock where I gently pull the boat back, clearing the trailer, then tying the boat off, sometimes out of the way of other boaters waiting to launch, I then get in my truck and go park. When recovering the boat I will back my trailer into the water enough where I can reverse the process. I never drive the boat onto the trailer or drive it off the trailer. I use the winch strap to winch the boat back onto the trailer and to hold it in place while launching...I know it's a lot of work and yes, I do get my feet wet while launching and recovering. I have gotten to the point where I know exactly how far to drive the trailer into the water where it is easy to use the winch in order to get the boat back onto the trailer with the least amount of effort. Launching is just a matter of backing in just enough to where the boat floats and starts to move back....Works for me so far, I can usually do this in a couple of minutes. It also helps that I do my fishing during the week days when the docks are mostly empty with not a lot of people waiting in line. I try to avoid the water on weekends or holidays when all the crazies are out. Down here taking your boat out on weekends can get sort of dangerous with all the boats out on the water. The slicks will probably make it easier for me to recover doing it the way I do..Just my 2 cents..

I'm interested in your opinion. I think I need semi-slicks... less stick than I have, but enough stick to keep in on the trailer...

P.S. your anchor knot is cool and works well. You have to a good tug when its under a little load, but it works. 'Cross, you used the knot in Freezer's video? I haven't had a chance to experiment, but if you've had success with it I'll start there.

I played around once by spraying silicone spray on the bunks.....the boat FLIES off the trailer, so you had better make sure you let it down easily with the winch strap attached, or you'll be picking your boat up off the ramp. Makes winching it up easy as well.
