So Saturday I went out on the river at first light and we fished till dark tearing the Stripers up! Throughout the day we ran over a hundred miles and I turned the motor on and off at least 20 times!
I never had any issues. We put the boat on the trailer at about 7pm and headed home. That night I just sprayed the boat down. I didn't flush the engine as we were going out the next morning. Got to the ramp at 5:30am the next morning and the motor wouldn't start. It cranks but it isn't turning over.
I just don't understand what could have happened. The kill switch was on there and I even tried bypassing it just to make sure that wasn't the issue. Does anyone have any ideas?
The motor is a 2003 200hp Mercury Optimax with 530 hours on it.

It cranks but it isn't turning over. Is this to say you can hear the starter, but the motor isn't turning over? I had an Optimax that did that to me once. Luckily I was at the launch on the way in and they had a hoist to get me loaded and home. It turned out that the bendix on the the starter wasn't popping up to engage the sprocket on the flywheel. Some crud was keeping it locked down. 1 screwdriver to pop it loose, a little WD-40 on the shaft and I was good to go. With no small amount of embarrassment, I should add.

Yeah, I think you got that backwards... it turns over but it wont crank .... meaning the starter engages and spins the flywheel, but it won't ignite and run? good idea bypassing the kill switch. check to see if there is a fuse for your ignition. Do all your gauges come on when you flip the switch to on? if not, it might be your ignition switch.

Thanks fellas and yah freezer I did confuse the two! Thanks for clearing it up. Just for giggles today I went out and checked the fuses and they looked good. I then took one of the relays off the tilt/trim and put it in place of the engine relay and she fired up! $15 and I think I am ready to go this weekend! Course it wasn't pissing on the hose so tomorrow I will take it down to the river and verify it is pissing. I need to find a big tub or something here at the house to put the motor in so I don't have to use the hose.

Me too and there's a connection at the bottom so you can fill it or drain it from there

Do you guys leave those tanks filled with water? Or drain them and refill? Also, do you put any type of additive in there?

I drain and refill, no additives but I have thought of making a vinegar solution for a descale.

Also i set my tank so the pee stream goes back in the tank so I'm not just pumping the water out.

well i got the tank filled and it was actually running better than with the hose......then stopped peeing altogether, so i pulled the hose that feeds the telltale no water was coming through it either. Seriously, if its not one thing, its another with this garbage engine. I'm about to give up.

Seriously, if its not one thing, its another with this garbage engine. I'm about to give up. Did it run hot while in the tank? Should run a lot cooler than on muffs. I too drain and refill my tank. I normally run the motor at idle in the tank for at least 10 to 15 minutes after every saltwater use. (also with the stream dumping back into the tank). My tank holds about an inch of water after it's drained all it will through the drain hose, so I do add a little liquid dish soap to the remaining water to kill any skeeters that might be breeding in there during the summer months.

I pulled the thermostat and will order a new one tomorrow. I think it went bad. Inside the block looks terrible. I flushed my engine after EVERY outing. There is no way it should look like it does. Cheap cast iron block. Going to start putting money aside to repower, maybe in a year of two, if it lasts that long.

I read on the THT forum about using a vinegar solution to descale the cooling system. Haven't tried it yet. Looks like you mix vinegar with water and run it through the motor.
