It appears that the coupler on the tongue of my trailer no longer latches down in the locked position. This may or may not be an issue because I always have a hitch lock on it so I don't guess it could just spontaneously open on me, but it makes me uncomfortable.
It says it's a Class II which means it's rated for 3,500 lbs. GTW. For a couple $ more than a replacement Class II I could get a Class III that is rated for 5,000 lbs. GTW. Is this a case where bigger is better (i.e. pizza, beer, etc.) or would it make no difference?

Can't really see how it would make a difference, can you adjust the fork underneath to make it clamp down tighter or is latch on top just worn out?

Seems like the spring behind the trigger on the latch is shot. I sprayed some penetrating oil on it, but it's still moving stiffly. It will stay put if I manually push it into the latched position, but it won't do it voluntarily.

Good Show Phil. I didn't know such a kit exists. I will search for the appropriate one. Thx.

Great info. I never had a clue that you could buy those parts like that.

If you have to replace. No difference. And most trailers your going to pull with your truck will have the smaller ball so you dont need two hitches if you keep the smaller.

I've known of a guy who lost the tips of a couple of fingers messing with a coupler that appeared to be fully seated and wasn't.

I wouldn't poke around if it was on the ball, but just sitting there by itself the fork inside doesn't have enough spring behind it to hurt you does it?

No, it can't hurt you just sitting there. He was hooking it up to the truck. He had lowered it onto the ball and the latch was evidently holding it up so that the coupler wouldn't seat. He reached up under to check to see if it was seated when it fell and seated smashing his fingers in the process. He said it happened so fast that he didn't even think about it before hand.

So I got my new coupler installed over the weekend. I also changed out my safety chains. Instead of chains, I got these coiled cables with S-hooks that have a spring-loaded closure on them so they can't slide off. Pretty slick. When you unhook them they coil back up so they're not hanging all over. The coils are wrapped in vinyl/plastic/rubber like a bicycle lock. That way you don't get chain rust on your hands when you touch them.

Watch them closely, the exposed cable will splinter and when it does, it hurts like HELLLLL to get one of the metal strands in your finger. Don't ask how I know.

Thanks for the heads up Juan. Is Duck Tape a suitable prophylactic when you reach that point?
