Do any of you Optimax owners know if you can replace the OEM oil drain screw in the lower unit with a magnetic one? My Yamaha has one and I like the idea of the magnetic screw to attract any metal shavings I might get in the gear case oil but I've read that they shouldn't be installed on some outboards... (I can't imagine why unless the magnetic end of the screw might touch a gear or something)

Can't say for sure, but I did look up in my buddy's catalog and Marpac offers a magnetic drain plug for Mercury lower units. So, I'm thinking if they're making one people must be buying them and using them. What could it hurt? There's nothing electrical going on down there is there?

Are you sure it's not magnetic? Mine on the Verado are but the magnet is recessed into the plug not sticking out.

Just 3 plain stainless screws. oil drain plug screw, vent screw and oil level screw. That's another thing... why do they have both a oil level screw and a vent screw? On my Yamaha, there's only 2 screws...the oil drain screw and the oil vent screw. When oil comes out the vent screw, it's full.

I posted the question on the Mercury forum.. they claim they have 5 experts that will answer your question within 24 hours... It's been longer than that. Apparently no one knows.

Can you magnetize it yourself, or is it aluminum or stainless?

My Verado only has two so maybe they are learning better. I'm sure some whistle britches engineer had a good reason for three.
