I've just imported a 2007 238WA to australia and am having RPM and fuel economy issues. The motor has a Mercury Enertia 18P on it and am currently only pulling a max of 5400rpm (I'm told the max should be 6400) She takes about 10-15 seconds to get out of the hole and will not plane under 18knts. At 4500rpm I'm getting between 21-23knts and burning between 45-55ltrs an hour. Just wondering if anyone out there with the same boat/motor configuration has an improvement on this with a different prop. Im thinking a 16" 4 blade. Whats your thoughts? Cheers from down under

Firstly thwelcome31 , what speed are you reaching at 5400rpm? Just looked and saw your getting about 40% slip at 4500 rpm ?, first check your motor height is correct and that it's not burried. In theory dropping 2"s of pitch will gain you 400 or so rpm's and a four blade will reduce that if I'm not mistaken. I believe you've got more going on here than a prop problem. Contact Ken at Propgods.com or on Band Of Boaters and let us know how it goes.

Hi mate, I'm getting between 30-33knts at wot.5400rpm My mechanic here did drop the motor 2 holes when it got here as it was cavitating in turns, my maximum rpm was the same 5400 but my speed was around 40-42knts before it was dropped. the top plate on the outboard was about 4" above the bottom of the keel prior to being dropped as in photo. and now it's as only about 1 1/2" above the keel.

Yeah 26% slip where you are now, that's terrible. 6% slip where it was which is a really good number, I bet when you look at the AV plate while running your burried. should be able to see it just above the water. If I where you mate I'd raise here back up and get used to trimming in some on the turns, you fuel economy will improve too. Nice boat, lets see some more pics

I agree, put it back where it was or try a hole higher and either get a anti cavitation type fin, or trim it down or throttle back when you turn. A slightly lower pitch wouldn't hurt, but you aren't very over pitched.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. My 238wa has a 250 Yamy but should be close in performance numbers. I am running a Power Tech ofs4 17 pitch. The motor is mounted in highest position. I drop off plane around 18 mph. Top end is 48 mph at 5900(6000 is max for the Yamy). She cruses at 30 mph at 4000, and 40mph at 5000. These numbers are with full fuel tank loaded with ice and fishing gear, two adults on board.

Very nice Dave, did you raise the motor back up? What part of Australia?

17P Revolution 4 (Q4 Quicksilver) 6050 rpm @ 47 mph gps. I really like the 4 blade. It has a lot of bite in rough water and I can slow to a crawl with it. My other prop is a 17P Mirage Plus. I turn it 6150 rpm @ 49 gps

Simple Man....a stainless skeg guard would look great on that motor with that nice looking stainless prop...10-4.

Simple Man....a stainless skeg guard would look great on that motor with that nice looking stainless prop...10-4. Yeah, probably so but if I keep putting my head up my rectum and running over old sunken barges it's not going to matter. I did get to buy me a new prop and send my old one off to be reworked out of the deal. That and a wicked looking slice out of my skeg!

I put one on my Yamaha, they do look good but the very first time I put the boat in the water, I hit a rock... didn't hit it hard..but the bolts in the skeg guards are designed to shear off and that's what happened. There's a brand new skeg guard laying on the bottom of Apalachee bay. I'm going to be extra careful when the new one arrives.

I don't know folks , I put mine on a while back and it is still on there. I have hit a lot of stuff and that thing has come out of it unscathed...When I installed mine it was a really tight fit, having to use a rubber mallet to get it on there tight. Then I used a piece of 2x4 wedged between the floor in my garage and the skeg, just to make extra sure that it stayed in place, and tight, while I drilled the holes...No problems....knock on wood.

Hahaha sorry to hear about the flag. I think we have all lost equipment to the briny sea....I have lost gaffs, nets, lanterns, fishing rods ect, ect, the worse has to be your favorite lucky hat, and turning around only to find that it had vanished...I have watched most of these things sink slowly to the bottom unable to do squat about it....small price to pay for the pleasure of being on the water, especially on one of those days that your hands and arms hurt from pulling fish in all day long....hahaha 239_fishing

The worst I've seen so far was my buddy's wife dropping the range rover keys in the drink last weekend, I laughed but strangely he didn't. No sense of humor some people.

Now that would be enough to ruin your day, for sure! Yep and that was his only key, had to tow it to Hilton Head to get another made rofl , I laugh because he should've asked for another when he bought it. 021
