looking for a replacement engine for my second boat so that I can sell it as a complete package. What do you guys thing about this? He is asking $1,000 for it... 2006 Mercury Optimax 150HP Motor, 2 Stroke, 20 inch shaft. The motor runs. It has less than 900 hours. The motor recently had a new heliocoil put in for the #6 Spark Plug. All plugs have less than 10 hours. New fuel lines. Recently put on diagnostic machine, all checked out well (Avalon Marine Center). Also comes with a spare propeller, and all the rigging/ console/ throttle.

That is cheap, but why? Looks like it's been road hard and put up wet.... You mention that it has been helicoiled, why, was it poor maintenance or over tightening of plug...sometimes when a motor sits for long periods the plugs become hard to take out, and the result is stripped out threads, especially on aluminum, just saying. It is really hard to tell by looking at pictures. If all you need it for is to be able to sell your other boat as "complete" and the motor is running, and you have no intentions of keeping it, then $1000 ain't bad for that engine in running condition. The fact that it is so cheap is what makes me question it..I personally would not trust it as a keeper for myself.... ....Here is a link on going prices for that outboard. www.nadaguides.com/Boats/2006/Mercury/150-EFI/20020130/Outboard-Motors-Values

Looks like it was owned by a business on a lake, sure it's not pretty but if compression is good and everything works (oil system) you might have just found a good deal. They are probably repowering at the end of the season and will write this one off.

I'd say there's always a risk, but if it runs well and you're trying to resell it quickly, it's not that great of a risk. The controls and the oil tank are worth a third to a half of the price he's asking. Not to mention the other parts' value in the event it died. Get some Mercury Black paint and some clearcoat and repaint it. It will add $2,500 to the price of the not powered second boat you wish to sell.
That diagnostic machine should tell you how many of those 900 hours were in what RPM range. I'll bet half to two thirds are at idle.
