Is there a difference between trailer tires and car tires? If so will a place like Discount Tires sell or even know the difference? Thanks

Welcome to the forum:
I have always purchased my tires at walmart or if I want to get fancy I will go to Bass Pro. Over the years I have gone through a few sets of tires and the walmart or bass pro tires have always done well for me, nothing fancy just what the trailer manufacturer calls for. I tow my boat within a 150-200 mile radius from where I live. I have a 180cc on a single axle trailer that came with the boat when I purchased it new in 1998...

yes trailer and car tires are different. The difference being usually a stiffer side wall on a trailer tire either bias ply or radial. Trailer tires should also be labeled ST, short for special trailer and a passenger car tire will be P for passenger and light truck tires will be Lt. Do your self a favor and do some research before you buy, there are a lot of junk tires out there, aka china bombs. Just my 2 pennies.

troutslayer is spot on. I go to a tire store and get the same load rating (or higher if I can get it at the same price).

Discount tire can hook you up with what you need. They carry the Good Year Endurance that has a D load rating and is made in the good ole U.S. of A. May be overkill if you don't have to tow far but my trailer is a single axle and the D rating makes me feel a little better. A lot of my trips are 90 miles round trip.

I think that mine were D rated. They are trailer tires on galvanized rims.

I ended up ordering and getting goodyear endurance tires today. They were the only ones I could find still made in america (may be others but couldn't find) and they are d rated on a 14 inch tire. Plus n rated for 87mph
Ironically I had a tire blow out on the way to getting the new ones installed today lol. The old tires were 10 years old.

I don't think I've ever had a tire last 10 years, especially a trailer tire. The left rear tire on my trailer was only lasting about 6 months before the steel belts would start showing.. I had to buy another new tire two days ago and this time I pulled the hub off the axle and found the reason.. The hub bearings were shot. Replace the hub too so hopefully I'll get more than 6 months out of this one.

The worst part was I couldn't get the damn wheel off. Somebody had wrench them on way too tight with an impact apparently and the measly lug wrench I had wasn't cutting it. I had to just drive it the remainder of the way real slow. It was a few miles but it didn't seem to cause any problems.
