Thinking of replacing my 2000 Johnson 130hp. I have come across a 2002 Mercury 135 Optimax and a 2003 Mercury 150 saltwater. The 150 comes with all gauges and controls but needs a new tilt/trim motor. The Optimax has nogauges or controls and no wiring harness. The price difference is 2700 obo for the 150 and 1500 obo for the opti. I know I will need a new trim for the 150 and all gauges and binnacle for the optimax. But which would be a better deal and motor to go on a 2001 sea pro 190cc. Or just keep the Johnson?

The 150 IMO because you get all the gauges etc, not sure how much the trim motor is but you can pay a lot of money for all the rigging in a hurry. Just my two pennies.

Yeah just a quick search for the gauges and binnacle and already up to almost $1000. To replace the trim motor was only a couple hundred.

Unless you're having some serious problems with the Johnson, I'd just keep the Johnson. Why spend the money, have to do the install just to get a whole new set of problems for a 20 hp increase? Just my 2¢.

I'd run the Johnson if you're not having problems with it. No telling what those other motors are going to need and you've already done a good bit to yours. If you just want to swap, I'd go with the 150.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with my Johnson. And since I have put a few $$ into it I may as well run it till she craps out on me! My wife even said the same thing why by another motor when ours is running fine. I rather you use that money on something else. So it sounds like a green light to get me something for the boat. Thinking a T Top or a bigger gps/fishfinder

I have 2 150 Optimaxs on my boat and the fuel mileage is on par with the newer 4 strokes. A long hard day 40 + miles offshore running and gunning burns 50 gallons..I’ve had Johnson’s that would burn more than twice that much. Might be something to factor in if you run it a lot
