I have an issue with the steering on my sv2100... sometimes the steering wheel almost free spins, like there is nothing there at all. If you snatch the wheel quickly, it will almost re-engage (if that makes sense) and then the motor will turn. There is a small amount of fluid leakage at the helm but everything motor side has been replaced and is new. Time for a new helm? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like you have air in the system. Can you tell where the leak at the helm is coming from? If it appears to be leaking from or near the fill cap, the vent spring inside the fill cap may be stuck in the open position allowing fluid to pass by or the rubber o-ring may be leaking. You shouldn't need a new helm since the seals can be replaced. Once you've found and fixed the leak, you'll need to purge any air out of the system and that requires bleeding at the hydraulic cylinder.. It's easier to do if you have help or you can buy a cheap brake fluid bleeder like used on cars at Harbor Freight and do it yourself or take it to a mechanic.

I will check to see exactly where it is leaking from. I have power brake bleeders so that should be no problem. I will get the seals and give that a try first. It just kinda threw me off because it has a very "mechanical" feel to it and didn't seem like an air issue but, it is a new boat to me so I don't know what normal should feel like on it. It almost acted as if it was slipping teeth and then catching. Much like a rack and pinion with a bad worm gear would feel. I'll start with the seals first though and hopefully that may fix it. Thanks

Do you have a helm that tilts? There is a mechanical knuckle (universal joint) in tilt helms. If it is screwed up you'd get the feeling you described. Not to say that there isn't air in your hydraulics. There most likely is and changing the seals will do you a world of good. IMO.

Yes, If you have a leak, you need to fix it or you are just spinning your wheels. It does sound like air in the system and you need to bleed it.

I've got the same thing with a 2008 207WA. What seal kit do I need to buy? Is it sea-star?
