Went out yesterday around 3 am. Hit some lights as it was a flushing tide, slow snook bite. Then went to my fav. bar for the sunrise and incoming tide. Good trout bite to 19.5" then with a little incoming yet before high tide went to some real skinny that I had only done in my kayak , maybe 2.5' at high but killer mangrove flood. Area was dead! I thought it was pollen on top of the water. Wind was still low so went out a pass and headed towards Tampa bay(20 mile run) . Nothing , seas were calm. No birds nothing breaking and again gulf covered with "pollen". Got up to Egmont but there must of been 30 boats spooking any schools of tarpon that were around. I fished four an hour with spot lock on . 3 times other boats drifted within a half a cast of me... Say the least I got nothing there. Took the intercoastal home and there was so many boats on the water I could not open it up for the wakes. Got home and watched the news and the "pollen" turns out to be huge red tide bloom. I normally cough a lot with it, did not this trip , though my throat is sore today. We had a big red tide event about ten years ago and the bay is just coming around. On that one even the horse shoe crabs were killed. That and all the boats I am thinking about selling my boat and salt water gear and investing heavier in bass fishing, freshwater. Will see what the next month brings.

I completely agree. As a Commodore myself, I hate to see a red tide or a Crimson Tide. Not conducive to good sailing.

...EVERYONE fears a Crimson Tide. Not everyone does but I agree most folks fear a Crimson tide more than a rip tide!

Got out this am ,the red tide algae bloom did not seem in the bay yet. Did not head out the pass or get near it, just dock lights and two bridge shadow lines til sunrise. No tarpon but the snook bite still slow even with a lot of bait swimming around. Got to agree with you all, college football in general sucks, but on the upside , it does keep a lot of people off the water on Saturday afternoons so it is a good thing.

Haters gonna hate. I think the FWC has a red tide section on their web site that reports the locations and percentage. A buddy sends me a link to it every time it shows up up this way. It's getting hotter and the bloom is past due for this area.

That sucks, I've heard it's effecting the tourist industry also with people canceling rental vacation homes on the water. Not good all around.

It's bad enough to make the national news in between blasts on Trump so it has to be bad.. They're saying it's even worse than it was in 2006 and that one lasted 17 months. We get a dose of it every year in the panhandle but it's never as bad as it is in SW Fla. right now.

Put a mask on and ran the intercoastal from venice to north bradenton(south sarasota co to north manatee co). Lot worse then the 2006 red tide event. Saw everything from dead rays to horseshoe crabs floating . Left the boat a buddys dock and caught a car ride home. Hope Tampa stays clean , that is still a dooable trailer for a couple hours fishing... throat is raw and eyes still red.

Man, that's terrible. I bet tourism money will beat big sugar money pretty soon. .. if that's what is the cause. I've seen fingers pointed everywhere on the internet...

Did I just see where they temporarily banned the catching of redfish and something else in red tide areas? It must be getting worse.

Not sure about the Reds, but they have cancelled the regular Snook season, and made it catch and release only, in certain areas of west Florida.
