So, at the lake the other day, I put her in and took off up the lake. I was at about 3/4 throttle and looked down and noticed the RPM gage said 5800 and the motor was trimmed all the way down. This was not where the RPM would normally be. I shut the engine down, looked it over, and restarted it. Everything seemed fine but still RPM's way too high on the gage. I ran her up to full throttle trimmed down and the gage read 6200. I put her back on the trailer and went home.
Normally I struggle to get to 5800 wide open, lightly loaded, and, trimmed out just right.
Help???

Also, speed seemed low for the throttle position. What are the symptoms for a hub going bad?

What are the symptoms for a hub going bad? Everything you just mentioned.. sounds like the hub is slipping. It will only get worse. You should be able to put it in gear and try to spin the prop to check it but since that doesn't always work when the hub is slipping only at higher rpms, you can pull the prop and mark the prop and the hub then replace it and after running it, pull it again and check to see if the marks still line up.

My tach occasionally goes batty on me and reads high. Think it is a wiring issue somewhere. However, if based on throttle position speed is low, I'd start with the hub on the prop.

Is it reading correctly at idle? I'm leaning hub, but tachs do go wonky sometimes.

When my tach is off, its off across the board. It will read 2500 RPM's at idle. Then somehow magically it corrects itself after a few power cycles.

So, how does one spin a hub? Do you have to hit something or does it happen organically?

Normally you have to hit something to spin a hub but it's just rubber that's designed to absorb shock when shifting and to save your drive train if you hit something so not sure but I guess one could dry rot or wear out if you shift in and out of gear a lot.

Yeah they can just wear out. Pretty much like a motor mount in a car.
