Posting this info in hopes that it helps somebody else out. If your boat has a Racor fuel-water separator that uses a Racor S3240 element and you have a problem with the bowl, you can replace the element and bowl with a Sierra 18-7968 element. I found this out a few years ago with the help of a very helpful associate at West Marine. When I was at the Outer Banks a couple weeks ago, the gasket in my FW separator bowl drain failed. The local parts shop couldn't get a bowl for four days, but they were able to get the Sierra element by 830 AM the day after I called them. This info kept me on the water all week instead of having to leave the boat on the trailer.

Great advice. I use Sierra oil filters.... A LOT cheaper than OEM parts and just as good.

THANK YOU!! I've been looking for that information. I have the same Racor system on my boat and I've been reading about the older bowls failing. I think mine is one of the newer ones but I'll still get the Sierra filter as a back-up.

The bowl that was on mine was made by Sierra. I was gonna keep it and get a new drain assembly but a few days after I took it off, a bunch of cracks appeared in it. I may have stressed it with the filter wrench when I took it apart from the filter element but wouldn't the cracks have appeared immediately if that was the cause? Anyway, after the drain gasket failure and seeing these cracks, I may just continue to use the filter element I referenced above and keep a spare onboard. The only time I ever drained the bowl was when I replaced the filter element, so I don't think I'll miss anything by not having the bowl. Here are pics of the failed gasket and cracked bowl.

Found one at an O'Reilies auto parts store, they wanted over $28 for it. Is that even close to right?

I think that's about what I paid for it at NAPA but I didn't have any other choice and I try not to pay attention to what I pay for things when I'm on vacation. Looks like it's around $20 at west Marine & amazon.

OK, thanks, this is great to know. I've never had a problem with my Racor system but it's prudent to have a backup.
