I have always just twisted mine to shorten for different vehicles. Going to be placing quick links on all my trailers to make adjustments from here on.

I've never twisted but I have put a bolt through the links to shorten the chains. I wonder if that weakens the links? I also cross the chains...the chain from the left side of the trailer goes to the right side of the hitch and vise versa.

My trailer has cables that adjust themselves kindof like a spring. I twist the chains on my utility trailer to keep them from dragging asphalt.

I think it is law in FLA that the chains have to be crossed. I have added quick links to my trailers. I have long chains as pulling with three different vehicles. photo upload

I've got cables like Freezer on my boat trailer. I cross the chains on my utility trailer. I guess if I ever felt they were too long it would be better to take a couple links out rather than twist them. Skeeter's video was scary and amazing. I would not have thought there would be such a strength degradation.

Wow, what a difference twisting the chains make, a decrease in strength by 70%.. unreal.

Chain links arent that strong either. Better off getting a slip or grab hook with a clevis pin and shortening from the front of the chain. Just choose whatever link you want to put the hook on.
