I just got beat up on a camper forum for stating I drive 80 mph on the highway while towing . I do this when towing my 21' boat also. We have a decent freeway system here in FLA. If traffic and road conditions permit 80 is my norm. Dual axle and bearing buddies and I do get my wheels balanced . Just wondering if it is the camper crowd still living in 1973 and Nixon's 55 mph thing.

I'm around 75-80 on the interstate, any slower and all the 18 wheelers are up your arse.

I had a State trooper friend tell me once that unless they were having a really bad day, a State trooper won't usually stop you at 10 mph over the speed limit. Ever since then, I've tried to stay at or below 10 mph faster than the posted speed limit (which in Florida is 80 mph on I-10) but at 80 mph, I get about 8 mpg pulling the boat, so I seldom do 80.

I have a 30-foot travel trailer equipped with a weight distribution hitch and anti-sway bars and I'd be in fear for my life if I were to try to tow that thing at 80 mph. It would be nice to go that fast because there wouldn't be many semis passing me, but that's a lot of air to buffet a lot of surface area. I pull my boat at 75 without thinking about it.

I'm comfortable at 70-75 which is just above the 65 mph speed limit in the area I live (South Florida)...I try to drive in the right lane only moving into the left lane when passing...I'm pulling a 180CC on a single axle trailer, when that boat is topped off with fuel I'm pulling a fair amount of weight, plus I have the axle as far back as it will go, that trailer pulls straight as an arrow with no sway at all. My tow vehicle is a Silverado Z71 4X4, that truck has no problem pulling that boat on the road or at the ramps. With that single axle trailer a blow out at high speed would not be pretty, that's for sure.
