I removed my lower unit to change the impeller, now I’m trying to put it back on. I’ve never done this before so I’m not sure if this problem is normal. I am having trouble getting the shaft into the upper unit. Not getting the splines to align, getting the shaft started in the receiver hole. Does it usually require a lot of force? Of course, all the videos show it sliding right in. I’ve greased the splines and the bushing. I’ve gotten it to go into the bushing a little but thats it. I’ve tried rotating the shaft and turning the lower unit as I push but it won’t slide in. Any suggestions?

Are you sure the lower unit and the shifter are both in neutral?

Are you sure the lower unit and the shifter are both in neutral? This isn’t a problem with things on the lower unit not lining up. I can’t get the shaft through the bushing at the bottom of the center unit and so can’t get the lower unit up to the point where I have to be concerned with alignment.

I had the same issue last year on my first impeller change. Everything I saw online just seemed to line up first try. I just kept at it and it finally went in. I don’t remember having to apply too much force.

I ended up having to order another one after consulting with Andy at SIM. The bushing is bad. There is a ridge on one side.

Be careful that snap ring doesn’t look fullly. Seated equally all the way around
