Fished the last 2 days out in Louisiana, not a bad drive from Houston. We checked into the motel at the marina and I asked the lady in the office if everyone was headed north or south. She told us south but the fishing was not good, between that and seeing a Guide filet gafftop I wasn’t overly optimistic.
Headed south to the old jetties, the wind was blowing out of the south between 10-15mph rising tide. I couldn’t get my anchor to hold and my push pole wasn’t long enough (saving for a power pole), so I went over into West Cove for some calmer waters. Fished a few points and caught nothing but Croaker, Hard Heads and Gafftops. Seen birds working over some reefs so I went over to see if that would be any better. Drifted that and not a single bite. We were using a popping cork with live shrimp. Ran up to Joes Cove on the way back to the Marina and same story, Croakers and Hard Heads with the exception of one 11 inch trout.
Next morning, I ran north to Turners bay. Fished a couple points up there. Calm winds out of the south on a outgoing tide. Croaker and Hard heads and one 9 inch trout. Drifted the reef and fished around the entire island in Turners with no luck.
Very abnormal trip, but a bad day on the water is still better.....

Great report. emthup Like they say, "That's why they call it fishing and not catching". If we didn't have a few bad days, we wouldn't appreciate the good ones. I fished a new to me bayou yesterday and found a few hardheads and sailcats too. I did manage about a dozen trout but had to work for them and only two were legal size. This time of year most of the trout around here are in a little deeper water and aren't as easy to find as they are in cooler temps but they're still out there.

You’re right about the deeper water, the water temp was mid to upper 80s already. Aside from the water temp we’ve been pounded with rain the last few months so the low salinity also didn’t help much.
It was my 6 year old sons first trip out there and he was still very excited. I can’t imagine the look on his face when he hooks up with a good size redfish.

Does all that freshwater from up north have it messed up?

Yeah, between that and the wind. Haven’t had a chance to read any of the reports lately but I hope the fishing picks up. I’ll be headed back out in September. In the meantime Galveston is where I’ll be. I hear the fishing ain’t great there right now either unfortunately.
