I have a 2002 Optimax 225 DFI. When you turn the key to start, you get a single beep system test alarm and then it stops and I can start the motor. I was working with the connection to the fuel gauge and turning the key to start and off a couple of times, everything was fine. The third time I did it, no test alarm beep. However, voltage was still getting to the gauges. After 5 seconds I got a continuous alarm (low voltage alarm?). I recharged the battery just in case and again, no startup alarm. I tried to start the engine and it only cranked, never turned over. I checked the voltage at the battery with the key on at the start position and it said 12.2 volts.
Any ideas? Do I need to replace the battery? The battery is going on 2 years old now.

Sounds like the battery is doing what it's supposed to. Is the kill switch key still in place?

I didn't mention that, but yes, the lanyard is in place.
I just wonder if me messing with the fuel gauge has anything to do with it? Not sure how it could. It happened shortly after that.

Update - I finally took the boat to my mechanic. The battery tested fine and the gas gauge has nothing to do with the issue. The mechanic has narrowed it down to the ECM not functioning correctly. He says he thinks it got fried and I might need a replacement. I got a quote of $1200 which seems ridiculously high. Does anybody know where to get an ECM at least a cheaper one?

12.2 is really low. Battery at full charge should be 13+ volts. Did you put a load tester on it? Try switching to both house batteries. Fried ECM?? Were you arcing stuff? 2002 outboard, should be able to find running used entire engine for near that price or a lot less for a dead "parts outboard" .If it is just changing out a EMC you don't need a mechanic. Buy the manual on your engine or download it. Just the emc check ebay. www.ebay.com/p/859610A71-ECM-Engine-Control-Module-2001-2002-Optimax-225-HP-Mercury-Mariner/10006575265
