My 2001 Merc 115 Saltwater 4 stroke has a broken vacuum line at the top of the lower unit, about an inch and a half showing external to the lower unit. where does this connect, and how intensive is the job of replacing it?

The speedometer lines I'm familiar with run from the speedometer, under the cowling and then out at the base of the lower unit where they connect to the speedometer hose extending out of the lower unit with a plastic splice. They usually come apart at that splice. I've also found that if you need to replace the splice, the ones they sell at pet stores to connect aquarium air lines work perfectly.
Worse case is if the hose is not sticking out of the lower unit... then to reconnect the hose you'll have to pull the lower unit to get to the connection and if that's the case, I'd just wait until the next time I needed to change the water pump and do both at the same time.

Awesome, great news, my little hose out of the lower unit is in fact sticking out about an inch, its cut on an angle, so I am guessing that is where the splice is.. will work on it this week and let ya know!

Notoriously inaccurate. Down load a free app for your phone if you need a speedo and you don't have gps. Lots for free, might as well grab a weather alert app too. shrisahibtech.com/blog/best-speedometer-apps/ . Fix is ez but why . Gauge hole could be used for a more useful instrument. Trim level, big gas gauge, digital voltage meter for trolling motor batteries, picture of your wife...

The speedo was the first thing I removed from my sv1900. I bought a stereo that fits the hole to fill it in.
