Okay, I'll bite.. I agree it's just stupid to use anything but a stainless alignment pin in a water pump but What's the purpose of putting zip ties around the impeller? That's possibly going to scar the impeller fins and has to get in the way of putting the housing back on .. (which could be worn and should be replaced when changing a water pump)

He’s going to lubricate the fins with soap (or something benign), start the new housing down over the fins and when he’s satisfied they’re all in and correctly oriented, he’ll cut the zip ties and pull them out. Then he’ll get the housing the rest of the way down and bolted. Brilliant.

Thanks for the tip it looks a lot easier than turning the shaft while mounting the housing

I'd worry about them scaring the impeller fins when I pulled them out and so far, getting the impeller inside a housing hasn't been an issue for me. Just gotta lube em and make sure they're bent in the right direction.

You nailed it, also another use for astroglide . Not been a issue with the zip ties , but my neighbor that showed me that used hemp twine, but I think he would have used zip ties if there had been zip ties back then, as tying the knot was a two person job.

The times I have changed empellars, plate and hub I usually orient the splines in the right direction and turn by hand and it usually slides right in, never had any issues..I say if it works for you, go with it.
