I'd like to upgrade an existing through hull livewell pump to a larger gph pump to supply water to two livewells. I think the existing pump is 500 gph so thinking 800 or 1100 gph? Can a pump supply water faster than it can run out of the overflow? How can you tell what's too much?

The 500 could barely keep up on my 2 livewells. I changed it to an 800 and just adjust the flow in each livewells. It will go over if just running 1 at full throttle. But it was one of the best and easiest things I have done on my boat. I have a 2002 sv1900.

I would have to order anything larger than an 800 gph but I can and will get one of those locally. I put a shut off valve in the livewell I plumbed and I have an automatic timer hooked to both so I should be good to go. (fingers crossed)

Pin you are pinning your bait against the wall of the live well then its TOO MUCH !!! LOL Ha! I just didn't want them flowing onto the deck. I changed from a 500 gph to an 800 gph pump to serve two livewells instead of just the one the boat was originally plumbed for. (This is not on a Sea Pro) Was almost a disaster when I broke the handle off the stuck seacock valve under the pump! A replacement seacock was a little under $300. and it's plastic / composite and not brass! Being the cheapskate I am, I removed the valve, reattached the handle by drilling a hole through the valve and then left it in the open position. Luckily, a simple $2.00 garden hose shut off valve has the same threads as the pump, so I installed one of those on top of the seacock and under the pump. Simple fix and actually a lot easier to shut off and on. Moral of the story: Service / lubricate your seacock valves annually.

That’s great advice on not forgetting about the sea cock. I almost had the same problem with mine!!! I put some Kroil and let it set for a day and it started to move again thank goodness!!!

Ok, stupid question. Is there a sea cock valve on every live well or bilge pump? I have never fooled with either.

Only sea cock you should have is on the raw water pick up. and "raw water" means water that enters from outside the boat... You should have a seacock under any inlet that allows water from outside the boat to enter inside the boat. Like under livewell and wash down pumps. A seacock allows you to close off the inlet water if you were to have a pump or hose failure.

Well, learned something new. It probably would be a good idea to locate this valve and make sure it's functional.
Thanks Juan.

In the bilge, port side. livewell pump is probably mounted on top off it.

Good to know. As soon as Texas defrosts, then I'll get out and have a look. 1 degree today, can you believe that?

It was 22 deg this morning on Dauphin Island. Y'all don't forget about exercising the big drain valves either. My boat has three of them on the bottom of the transom and the one 3/4" under the livewell pump.
