Ok so probably none of you guys eat Sailcats. We actually love them if cleaned right. Saturday I caught one that was close to the 10lb mark. Biggest Sailcat I’ve ever seen. Head was 7” wide and he was at least 25-28”. Heres the issue , we weren’t eating fish this weekend so I just put it back. Today my son (who targets and loves to eat them) told me that the world record is 10lbs. What the ####! It’s hard enough explaining how good they taste to people but it quite possibly would have been a record. Didn’t even think to measure or weigh it. 😤🤬

How ďo you target sailcats? They eat anything and everything I throw. I can't seem to "not" catch them and have always considered them as trash.. but they do fight as good or better than reds. I'll try anything once so snot cat is on the menu. I'm giving the tourists time to get home so I'll be fishing Wednesday and will probably catch a couple. You'll always remember the one you released and later found out it might have been a record. I did that with a nurse shark.

Pieces of squid in a boat channel is the best way. We caught 25 in half an hour Saturday . Wife caught 6 in 3 cast back to back (double rig) . After we started eating them we didn’t catch one for 2 years on the flats.

wow. 10# is a huge sailcat. I caught a 5# and it would have been the state record at the time, but they just started listing them and I figured it wouldn't last long. I was right. That 13' alligator I got was the third largest at the time, but gator hunting was in it's second year. It wouldn't even crack the top 20 now.

Not sure I would want to catch a 13 foot alligator. Caught a 3 footer at a pond couple weeks ago. It gave me all wanted out of a gator. 😂

How do you deal with the slime? I have a cleaning station next to my pond where I usually clean my fish and throw the waste into the pond for the fish and turtles to finish off but I read that sailcat slime is toxic so that might not be a good option. I'm guessing it's impossible to keep it completely off of the fillets so it must not be too toxic?

I’ve read that too just last night but never heard of anybody getting sick. I just wash them with the hose as good as possible but I do that with flounder too. We double bag the carcasses and freeze them until garbage day. I used to bury all my fish guts until the neighborhood cats started digging them up. Not sure if the slime is any different from a hardhead (will look into it). I did get tagged by a hard head Saturday , rubbed his slime in the wound and it was fine in an hour.

Just read that the old timers rubes salt on them. Seemed to get rid of the slime. I’ll try it next time.

My son told me today that he makes a slush with ice and the water he’s fishing in. It keeps the slime to a minimum.
