My very reliable Mercury wouldn't start the other day. No spark and after checking resistences and continuity of plugs, leads and coil back to CDi unit I found the problem was the silly cubic inch sized, sealed unit, toggle switch which in the parts catalogue is labelled STOP ASSEMBLY. I managed to find a partial circuit diagram which tells me virtually nothing except that its drawn as a magnetic switch. It doesn't even show the spark diversion to ground which stops the engine (which I'm doing manually by contacting the lead to ground to keep me on the water). However the circuit is supposed to work, I cant start with both sides of stop circuit connected to the insulated connector bullet loom but it starts easily as usual with the ground side disconnected. Well it would be handy to have a stop switch but why won't this circuit work if I connect a simple 12V 2 amp automotive toggle on off? It doesn't and the brain's going fuzzy. Anyone with any specific data about this particular switch so that I can source a reasonably priced replacement and wire it through to my helm console? I could suck it up and pay about either £70 for the official Mercury service manual or about the same for a new switch and lanyard direct from Mercury or thru a local dealer but with all due respect for their balance sheet, I'm not paying that money for what should be at most a £3 (about $5) item. In my researches I have seen a military aviation Honeywell switch that might do the job for $3000 but I looked inevitably at AliBaba and a switch which looked identical to that was US.30c. So, any ideas please?
