I bought a used 2005 180cc that has been outfitted with Baystar hydraulic steering. Unit works fine but I can't full tilt my Yamaha 90 hp because the steering cylinder hits the transom. Motor is already mounted one hole higher. At this point I'd like to convert back to mechanical steering, does anyone know what model NFB mechanical steering package is compatible with my 180cc? thank you

Changing from hydraulic to cable driven would be my last resort. (You might try raising the motor another hole or installing a jack plate.) If you decide to install a mechanical helm and sell the BayStar system, please list it here first. I could use one. I don't know which mechanical kit to suggest but you can determine the cable length by measuring from the helm to the gunnel then back to the transom and then to the center of the outboard... the three measurements equal the cable length.

I just installed the same hydraulic steering on my 2001 18 cc with a 115 Yamaha. I had the same problem. The manual instructed bolting the hydraulic cylinder pivot plate to the bottom side of the engine steering bracket. Before torquing everything to spec I test full range of motion (left right and trim up down). Cylinder contacted transom before I could trim all the way up.
I unbolted everything and reattached the hydraulic cylinder pivot plate to the top of the engine steering bracket. It was a tad tricky to get the bolt and nut back in place (less room to work with now that pivot plate is on top of bracket) but manageable. Tested full range of motion and no more issue contacting transom. Works great. My guess is someone followed the install manual to their detriment.
Parting word of warning. I upgraded from cable because it snapped. To replace with a new cable I would have to remove the engine to remove the tilt tube since the hole in the hull was not lined up w the tilt tube. Since hydraulic could fit without engine removal I just cut the old cable and tilt tube with a sawzaw and ran hydraulic lines to new helm pump.

SeaBro sharing his experience and solution is what makes this forum so great and valuable.
I agree with Juan, going to cable steering would be like going from a zero turn back to a push mower.
