Only so much "bend" in that shaft. Is the shaft guaranteed for life?

I thought I read somewhere that they were "indestructible" and guaranteed for life but it's obviously not true. I emailed Minn Kota and asked and all they did was send me a link to find an authorized Minn Kota repair shop. Took it there this afternoon. Estimated repair just under $1,000.

So this is from Minn Kota's web site:
Minn Kota Limited Lifetime Warranty on Composite Shaft JOME warrants to the original retail purchaser only that the composite shaft of the purchaser’s Minn Kota trolling motor will be materially free from defects in materials and workmanship appearing within the original purchaser’s lifetime. JOME will provide a new composite shaft, free of charge, to replace any composite shaft found by JOME to be defective during the term of this warranty. Providing a new composite shaft shall be the sole and exclusive liability of JOME and the sole and exclusive remedy of the purchaser for breach of this warranty; and purchaser shall be responsible for installing, or for the cost of labor to install, any new composite shaft provided by JOME.
Says that they would give the orig. purchaser a new shaft if there were defects in the original one. Your responsibilityl of installing it or having it installed. Might be an easy diy install??

I'd be watching some videos. You can get the shaft for $200-$350 (https://trollingmotorparts.com/minn-kota/minn-kota-parts/minn-kota-shafts/) if the JOME people don't perform. Authorized dealer try to screw Juan.
By the way, sorry for your loss. How in the hell did you do that?

I watched all the videos I could find about changing a shaft on an Ulterra and I only found one! Lots of videos on other models. The Ulterra is different. Unlike the other models, you can't change just the shaft. On the Ulterra, you also have to take the motor out of the lower unit housing and install it in a new one that comes attached to the new shaft. I'm sure I can do that....but then there's the drive belt! It goes through some gears in the housing and getting a new belt into those gears is almost impossible, so you have to buy a new housing with the belt already installed (at an extra $360.).. I probably couldn't thread the belt into the housing, so I took it to the local Minn Kota authorized repair shop yesterday afternoon. The mechanic told me he couldn't thread the new belt either and that he tried one time and gave up.. so a new shaft $280, new housing with belt $360, labor $300 = $940 to get it fixed. I've got my fingers crossed they can find and order the shaft. How it happened: It really was Minn Kota's fault that caused it but not the shaft. It was the remote control. It's poorly designed. I found out the hard way that if the remote control turns off, the motor does not. It keeps running on the last setting the remote was set on. BAD IDEA! I was fishing not far from the boat ramp when I decided to quit and go home.. I was still fishing within a hundred yards of the ramp, so instead of cranking the big motor, I just put the trolling motor on "Rabbit" (wide open) and pointed it toward the ramp. When the boat got within about 50 feet of the ramp, I attempted to slow down the trolling motor but the remote had turned off. Not sure why, since the battery indicator said it had a full charge.. maybe a poor connection on one of the batteries... anyway, I was so close to the ramp, all I could do was try to turn the remote back on but it didn't come on in time and I plowed into the rocks around the ramp going wide. If I had had time, I would have run back to the console, cranked the big motor and thrown it in reverse but there wasn't enough time. I also could have hit the trolling motor kill switch but I didn't even think of that until it was too late. It wouldn't have happened if the trolling motor was made to shut down when the remote shuts down. My opinion of Minn Kota trolling motors has dropped a few notches but Sheet happens.

Yep, my remote shuts off after about 10 minutes of inactivity. Poor design definately.

Yep, my remote shuts off after about 10 minutes of inactivity. Poor design definately. Yeah, mine always did that but I thought it was 20 minutes. I don't have a problem with that since it saves the batteries and I'm using it constantly so it has never timed out on me in the past. This time it died several times after only a couple of minutes. Something isn't right with the remote.

You might hit the button that takes it out of the water before you put it on the trailer next time!

Based on your experience? I don't have to now. I just invented the pivioting trolling motor shaft. Look for it in your local marine store soon.

Update: It's fixed! New "indestructable" shaft, trim module, remote, labor & tax = $1,034. Hopefully my boat insurance will cover most of that.
