I have a 2004 180cc. I am considering putting a jack plate on but I'm not sure if it will help improve performance and help running in shallow water as it already runs pretty shallow.
If I do get one I was gonna get the atlas 6" heavy as I can get it pretty cheap but idk if my transom will hold it without reinforcing it.

You sound like me. I've considered a jack plate for my 04 SV2100 ever since I bought it in 05. I actually bought a used one once but didn't install it. You just don't need one if your boat is rigged with the right motor and trim tabs. A jackplate might help get on plane faster in shallows but's that the only advantage I might get.

I have one on my 02 sv2100. It was on when I bought it so don't have a real comparison. I do like it though. It does help with performance I suppose but I rarely utilize that portion. You can definitely dial it in on plane to get the speed and rpms up. But mainly I just like having it so that when I go skinny I can jack it all the way up and trim up and basically run motor in almost the same amount of water as the boat will float in (+ a few inches) and idle through. Here in Texas the bay is shallow and you find yourself in a bad spot more times than you should....It has gotten me out of many spots I otherwise would have probably had to push or trolling motor out of.
That being said would I buy one if my boat didn't have one...probably not. If I bought a new boat would I spec it out...probably so
Seems not worth the money and time to install on an existing boat unless you run in shallow water all the time. (and frankly if you do, this isn't really the right boat for that anyways)
Also not sure about this but I believe it adds more stress to the transom..not sure how much it is effecting my boat but I have quite a few spider cracking and stress cracks around the splashwell/transom area. Not sure if that is normal. Plus my boat has a etec 200HO so pretty heavy. A 6 inch arm on that motor is causing some additional stress I would guess
