I have a 2004 Yamaha TLRC 90 2 stroke, and had a no start situation yesterday. I diagnosed the problem down to the neutral switch by the linkage on the engine side, not the throttle side with the microswitch. The switch looks like this: www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832625078830.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdaptAre there really two safety switches on these? And instead of replacing it, what would be the down side to eliminating it? Thanks.

My guess would be that if there's an option for a tiller control on that outboard then yes there would be a neutral switch on the motor, then if the tiller is not used you'd have one built into the binnacle also. I don't know about eliminating it, it might not only tell the computer it's in neutral but also if it's in gear. Only way to tell is disconnect it and see what happens, make a jumper wire and see what it does then too.

I did a little digging for that year range, and apparently it was put in place because of the popularity of aftermarket throttle controls, which may not have had an NSS. There is no risk of eliminating it as long as the throttle has one, and bypassing it was incredibly easy, just pull the switch out and plug the two wires into each other. One less thing to fail and cause a no start.
