The steering on my 90hp yamaha (2002 sea pro) has been stiffening up lately. I put some marine grease on the main bar that turns the engine, but that hasn't helped much. Yesterday, it took a serious amount of effort to make port-side turns. It was so bad that I missed the trailer when I was trying to get the boat out at the landing! I got wedged between one of the bunks of the trailer and the floating dock! anyway, does anyone know what I should be looking for to loosen up the steering?? thanks.

I had that problem, what I did to make it better was to take the nut off and squirt WD40 in the cable and I also cleaned the bar that slides through the motor. Eventually I had to replace it. What happen to me was salt water got into my cable and stiffened the grease and it rusted the inside of the hole where the steering rod slid through. Hope this helped

A new cable is in short order, I saw a 17 mako hit a bridge when his steering locked up..

Two words... Sea Star. Once you go hydraulic you will NEVER go back.

When it comes to steering issues it is wise to invest in the services of a professional. That being said a careful inspection will help you determine if its time to call the wrecker or if you can slowly nurse your car to the repair shop.

Go into General Sea Pro issues and look for my june 12th posts about my 2002 Suzuki / Sea pro steering issue. there is not enough room to change the steering cable on my Sea Pro without pulling the motor off to feed the new cable in. The difference in labor cost between pulling the motor and installing a Teleflex BayStar system offset the cost of upgrading to hydraulic steering !!! Details on where I bought the kit are in that post. When it is installed next week, I'll post the exact total cost.
By the way get the BayStar system (good up to 150HP) not the SeaStar system !!! Good luck and let us know what you decide so we can all benefit from your experience.

I forgot about this post..... After reading the initial replies, I decided to take it to a repair shop. They replaced the steering cable in short order! Now it steers great. I can make a turn with one finger on the helm!

Did they have to pull the motor off the transom to get the cable through ??
What did the whole job cost you in the end ??
