Went to the Mako today and it would not start. Even tried to jump it without any luck. I replaced both batteries last year.
When we pulled the top off the motor, a friend said he saw some smoke coming from the bottom part or below the starter. I also checked to see if the connections were good at the battery and the cable was warm. That was maybe after 10 to 12 times trying to start the motor.
The motor started without any problems maybe 2-3 months ago.
Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be either a loose ground connection to the block, or a loose hot connection to the starter.

Unless it was the starter itself, verowing is probably dead on, clean all the connects and see what happens. Here's a video to help with any other problems with your Johnson...
good luck!
