One of the things on my off season to do list is to replace the impeller. I can do it blindfolded on my inboard, but I've had this boat for less than a year, and have never done it before on an outboard. Oh, I've got a big Johnson. ;D
1. should I buy the whole kit, or just the impeller? 2. any tricks to it? 3. any other maintenance items that I should replace while I'm in there other than the lube?

If it's not got a strong pee stream or running hot you should probably change the entire water pump and not just the impeller...The housing can wear too and if the housing is worn installing a new impeller still won't give you the best water pressure. BUT... impellers son';t have to be changed annually like they used to recommend...(unless you run your motor a lot in sand or mud and the pee stream is now weak). The newer impellers are made of better material than the old ones were and might not ever need changing.. I've run the same one for 6 years now and it still pees as strong as it did the day I got it... just watch for the water coming out, if it slows down dramatically, check or replace the pump.

Good info. It's got a good stream, I just don't know the prevoius owners service history, it could be a year old, it could be 12.... same as the gear oil

If you are going to be in there any ways, I would change what I can. A little bit of money now could save a lot of money later. Just as you say....... I have no idea what the previous owner did or didn't do in the way of maintenance. Not to mention the piece of mind it will give you. I added a pressure guage to my outboard. That way, I can see and hear the stream as well as notice any change in pressure while it is running. (found a complete kit at West Marine in the discount isle for $11.00.)

Good news! The PO returned an email and told me he had all the maintenance done including the replacement of the VRO and water pump in August of last year! So I can take that off this years list and put it on next years. I think I will do what Carl did, and add a pressure gauge. That should give me some peace of mind going forward. Thanks for the tips.

carlw66; How did you hook up and where did you mount the pressure gage?? Did you mount it in the pee hole?

Here is a link to watch on water pump replacement. I would get the hole kit. If you don't you'll probably find that you should have once everything is apart. Also for the cost of foot oil I change it every year . Can't hurt.
