Out of general disgust with my current multi-carb engine, and carbs in general with ethanol fuel... repowering is high on the list. I think the budget calls for a used engine, I'd like a 200-225 Honda or super quiet, reliable 4 stroke. It seems the deals that I've seen so far are with someone that blew one engine out of a two engine rig and wants to sell the other so his engines match. Does it matter if you buy a left engine on a single engine setup? They seem to go cheaper and just wondered if there was something wrong with getting a single engine in the wrong direction from standard?

No absolutely not, the only difference is the foot is different. On a single engine boat it doesn't matter which way the prop turns.

What gnrphil said... makes no difference unless you're running twins where a left and right offset torque. Now left handed cigarettes do make a difference.

Would it make a difference to where your transducer(s)are mounted. With a standard rotation motor you want stuff mounted to the right of the prop. If you had a counter-rotating motor would your transducers need to be mounted on the left?

The reason this came to mind is that I just added a second GPS and transducer a few weeks ago. The mounting instructions said that you always go to the starboard side 3-4" outside the propeller's diameter so you have clean, non-turbulent water passing under the transducer. I just wonder if a counter-rotating propeller creates that turbulence on the other side.

I think that is mainly for inboards where the prop is ahead of the transducer, with an outboard your transducer reads ahead of the turbulence.

No to all questions. My 2006 SV2100CC had a counter twisting 225 on it. Transducer in same spot as always on the right side. No issues. Just make sure you get the right prop on it!

How embarrassing. I just pulled the model number off my current engine, and yep.... it's a counter rotation model. Still looking at options. Whats the opinion about the new Suzukis?

The little bit that I have read about the Suzuki is positive for the most part.

Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and sushi.... all made in Japan.. Personally I wish they were all made in the U.S.A. The motors are great, the raw fish, not so much. I know a guy who has owned a Suzuki 140 for as long as I've known him... many years..and he doesn't treat it well... we've run that thing offshore, trolling and all day hunting cobia for many years and the only issues he's had were rusted parts under the cowling and that was his fault.

I understand that when you re-power that all the controls ie: steering and gauges are extra...I am also under the impression that all fuel hoses should be replaced...What the heck, by the time you are done with the re-power you would have payed a few thousand more than what the actual engine cost...anybody have any input or experience with this? Since I can't afford a new boat, I have been kicking around the idea of improving on the one I have, which BTW suits my needs. I just need some up-grades. Any thoughts please.

I'd be looking for a package deal, you'd think a good salesman would be able to offer something to make the sale.

How loud are the Yamahas? compared to the Hondas and newer Suzukis?
